Remnant of another age
Quiet, leafy streets and remainders from times gone by mark Chelsea as among the oldest yet best preserved neighborhoods of New York.
The original movie studios point to Chelsea’s past as motion picture capital. The surpassing High Line – an official New York City park 25 feet off the ground on what had been an elevated rail line – explains the presence of the movies, not to mention the old slaughterhouses and factories yet also the new boutiques and hotels. The General Theological Seminary tells of rural beginnings and a seaside now far removed from its back wall.
Bootscrapers and coal chutes, horsewalks and servants’ quarters show how generations past thought and how they lived.
